Freedom of Conscience Support for Healthcare Professionals

You are not alone!

As a healthcare professional, your commitment to preserving and protecting life is more than a personal belief—it is a professional obligation rooted in compassion, ethics, and integrity.

At PHPA, we understand that healthcare workers can face increasing pressure to act against their conscience. That’s why we’ve partnered with the Human Rights Law Alliance (HRLA) to provide confidential legal support to PHPA members who find themselves in a difficult position at work.

Whether you’re being coerced to refer for abortion, threatened with disciplinary action, or denied your legal rights to conscientious objection, you do not have to face it alone.

What Kind of Support Does PHPA Provide?

We are here to walk with you every step of the way.

  • Personal Guidance
You’ll speak directly with a PHPA representative who understands your situation and can help clarify your options.
  • Partnership with HRLA
We are proud to partner with Human Rights Law Alliance, a law firm committed to defending freedom of conscience, speech, and religion. Their experienced team are available to meet with you to discuss your situation.
  • Professional Advocacy
We support your right to practise according to your ethical convictions and advocate for your protection in the workplace and beyond.

Who Can Access This Support?

Legal and advocacy support is available to:

  • All current PHPA members
  • Health care professionals facing workplace challenges relating to freedom of conscience
  • Health care professionals requiring support due to refusal to participate in, assist with, or refer for abortion or life-ending procedures
  • Health care professionals under investigation, threatened with disciplinary action, or needing preventative guidance in relation to a conscience issue.

If you're not yet a member, we encourage you to join PHPA so that we can stand with you. Please note that support is also available for Non AHPRA registered health care workers (e.g. administrative staff, healthcare technicians, students etc).

Discreet. Respectful. On your side.

We recognise the weight these situations can carry—professionally, emotionally, and spiritually. That’s why all inquiries are handled confidentially, and with the utmost respect for your wellbeing.

Our approach is based on partnership: PHPA walks with you, HRLA brings legal expertise, and together, we stand for your right to provide healthcare without compromising your conscience.
